Optivity Campus 6.1

Summary

Optivity Campus™ 6.1 is the latest release of Bay Networks industry leading mid-range network management system. Version 6.1 continues to seamlessly integrate with both Hewlett Packard's OpenView for Windows and Novell's ManageWise management platforms, and has also added Window NT support.

Optivity Campus 6.1 introduces several new or enhanced applications and support, including:

Optivity Campus 6.1

Optivity Campus 6.1 is the latest release of the premier campus management solution for Bay Networks. Optivity Campus 6.1 introduces Node Security Manager for BaySecure modules, Conversation Steering Control, SpeedView Lite 1.0 for Windows support of the BayStack 301 Desktop Ethernet Switch, StackProbe integration, and Windows NT and ManageWise 2.1 support .

Featuring Bay Networks leading LAN management technology, Optivity Campus works with Novell's ManageWise v2.1 and HP's OpenView Workgroup Node Manager v1.0 platforms to create an integrated solution for managing the entire network from a single console.

The Optivity Product Family

Optivity Campus resides on the host platform, delivering a wide range of features for managing the complete Bay Networks product family using SNMP. Bay Networks Autotopology™ dynamic mapping feature automatically discovers and displays all hubs, routers, bridges, switches, and end-stations to create an accurate network blueprint. This information is the basis for unique management features such as Switch Monitor, featuring VLAN analysis and optimization, and Nodal View™, a powerful tool for monitoring all devices connected to any Ethernet or Token Ring segment.

Features such as integrated hub, router, and switch management, in-depth RMON analysis tools, and ease-of-use continue to define Optivity Campus as the market leader.

Windows NT Support

With Windows NT 4.0 support, Optivity® supports the installation and operation of all Campus applications in an NT environment. Network managers have the option of installing Optivity Campus 6.1 on either Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or Windows NT Workstation 4.0.

Novell ManageWise 2.1 Support

Optivity Campus 6.1 now supports Novell ManageWise 2.1 on Windows 95 workstations. Now networks managers can install Optivity Campus within a Windows 95 and Novell environment.

Conversation Steering Control

Conversation Steering Control increases the switch management capabilities within Optivity Campus 6.1. This application allows network managers to steer or copy the traffic from one or more ports on a switch to a specified monitoring port. An external StackProbe, or any other industry-standard RMON probe, can then be attached to the monitoring port to review and evaluate the copied traffic.

Conversation Steering Control supports the BayStack 301 Desktop Ethernet Switch, BayStack 28000 Ethernet/Fast Ethernet Switches, and the Model 58000 Ethernet Switching Module.

SpeedView Lite 1.0 for Windows

SpeedView Lite 1.0 for Windows is bundled with Optivity Campus 6.1. SpeedView Lite for Windows is a graphical configuration and management application used to configure the BayStack 301 Desktop Ethernet Switch and to monitor and control network traffic. As the network grows and traffic patterns change, SpeedView Lite provides the information needed to streamline network design for optimum performance and efficient bandwidth utilization.

SpeedView Lite's key features include:

Node Security Manager

The Node Security Manager has been enhanced with a more robust and easy to use GUI, as well as added support for the Model 5300PS Ethernet Host Module. This application increases security on Bay Networks hubs as part of BaySecure, a comprehensive and innovative security technology that safeguards Ethernet networks from unauthorized surveillance and intrusion. Node Security Manager interfaces with Model 5300PS modules installed in a System 5000 hub, allowing network managers to secure ports using:

Figure 4 | Node Security window

Node Security window

Allowed Node security lets the network manager define a list of authorized stations for each port on a hub. Any attempt by an unauthorized station to connect to the port causes the agent to take action against the station.

Intrusion Control is a security feature which enables managers to maintain a list of authorized stations. This security feature is similar to Allowed Node security, but offers different ways of determining which stations are authorized to use the hub ports. If an unauthorized user attempts to access the network, the manager will be notified and the intruder can be instantly segmented from the network.

Eavesdrop Protection is based on the concept that confidential data should only be received by the stations specified as secure. The received packet is repeated only on ports considered secure for the destination address of the packet. On all other ports, the packet is disrupted.

StackProbe Support

Optivity Campus 6.1 integrates support for StackProbe RMON probes within the Campus Command Center and the RMON Analysis applications. In addition, the Probe Connectivity Dialog Box provides connectivity information such as the problem address and the probe interface number connected to a specific switch port. When used in conjunction with Conversation Steering Control, the data on a specific switch port can be copied to the port with a connected StackProbe.

Product Positioning

Bay Networks currently offers four Windows-based solutions for managing small to medium-sized network environments: EZ LAN™ and EZ Internetwork™; Optivity Campus for Novell's ManageWise; and Optivity Campus for HP OpenView for Windows.

The EZ LAN and EZ Internetwork applications make up the Optivity Workgroup™ family, which provides an entry-level solution for managing workgroup hubs, routers, and switches. Optivity Campus for ManageWise and Optivity Campus for HP OpenView for Windows are both targeted at campus network environments.

Utilizing Novell's ManageWise platform and requiring a NetWare server, Optivity Campus for ManageWise is targeted directly at the needs of customers in Novell environments. It is easily positioned into NetWare-centric IPX-only environments, as well as larger, more complex mixed IP/IPX networks. The product's number one selling point is the ability to integrate Bay Networks management and NetWare systems management on a single console.

Optivity Campus for HP OpenView for Windows provides a single-station solution targeted at non-NetWare environments or NetWare accounts not desiring NetWare server dependence. Based on a Windows architecture, the application delivers advanced management for traditional department and campus-sized Ethernet and Token Ring networks.
